Narrative:
I was hired to instruct a person in his twin small aircraft for a multi instrument rating. The aircraft had a fresh annual and paperwork appeared in order. After the second lesson we went through the paperwork more thoroughly and found that the certificate of airworthiness was missing and could not be found. I promptly grounded the aircraft until the matter was resolved. To prevent a recurrence more emphasis will be placed on preflight especially on planes that somebody is unfamiliar with.
