Narrative:
After taxiing out we were stopped and holding short of the runway and doing our before take-off checklist. I advanced the power on the right engine to do the 'nts [negative torque sensing] check' and noticed as I was adding power the engine was not acting normal and the power started to decrease and this was confirmed on the RPM gauge. The engine then began to shut down. The first officer noticed that there was black smoke and fire coming from the right engine. The captain immediately executed the 'engine fire on ground' memory items and notified ATC that the engine was on fire; requested the fire trucks and that the crew was evacuating. The first officer got out the check list and confirmed all items were complete. At that point we evacuated.I see no way the crew could have avoided this event. I am very pleased in the way that the first officer and I handled the event. Our training kicked in and we executed the communication with ATC; memory items; and checklist quickly and perfectly.
