Narrative:
Inadvertent penetration of palm beach arsa. I was en route from new york. Long island islip's airport to palm beach county airport. I was flying my small aircraft following from new york victor 1 to jacksonville then victor 267 to pahokee VOR (phk 112.4), I reviewed my charts, prior to arrival at phk to plan my route to palm beach county airport. I had planned on taking the 123 degree right from phk. South of the 1549' towers and just north of the antiquers airport then breaking north to palm beach county. Approximately 10 min out of phk. I smelled a strange odor in the cockpit, I noticed my ammeter was laying on 'O' then it would jump up to 10 or 15 then go to 'O' again. I tried calling pbi on 119.1 with no success. The next thing I noted was what appeared to be the 1549' tower off to my right. At this time I knew I was in trouble, unable to contact pbi I started shutting down equipment hoping I could maintain some sort of contact. I turned off the ADF, automatic pilot, both navigation communications, marker beacon, LORAN. About this time I noticed approximately 5 amp draw on the ammeter - note I still had the transponder on, next I did what was normal procedure maintain last known heading and get this plane on the ground west/O hurting myself or anyone else. I landed at palm beach county airport. I then got a message to call palm beach tower, which I did. I told them I had lost my VOR not knowing at the time my real problem was. Being an a & P mechanic I had a few hand tools in the aircraft. After a short investigation I discovered that the positive terminal had completely burnt off. I replaced the battery and all systems check normal. My flight home was normal, landing at night.
