Narrative:

Departed runway 09R at fll. After being handed off to miami departure the first officer noticed a rise in the #1 engine oil temperature. Oil pressure was stable. Crew elected to return and was cleared back to fll by miami departure. Upon being questioned by mia approach regarding our situation crew advised mia of high oil temperature and intent to return for precautionary landing. Handoff to fll tower was made approximately 3 mi east of 27L at 1000' MSL. Tower advised that aircraft was cleared to land on 27L but sufficient distance was not available for proper descent. Crew refused 27L and advised tower that they had expected 09L. Tower cleared aircraft for right downwind to 09R and asked if aircraft was experiencing an emergency. Crew responded in the negative and advised tower of high oil temperature on #1 engine. At this time oil temperature was still slightly high and oil pressure was still steady. Crew expected a left 270 degree turn from a heading of approximately north while again requesting 09L. Tower finally cleared aircraft for 09L. While turning base/final a witness of ground reported smoke trailing from aircraft's left engine. When crew reduced power on short final #1 engine RPM reduced approximately 500 RPM. At no time before this point did the crew feel that an emergency should be declared. Upon touchdown the #1 engine seized in a near feathered position.

Title: LTT FREIGHTER, RECIPROCATING ENGINES, HAD HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE ON LEFT ENGINE. RETURN LAND AT FLL.

Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 09R AT FLL. AFTER BEING HANDED OFF TO MIAMI DEP THE F/O NOTICED A RISE IN THE #1 ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE. OIL PRESSURE WAS STABLE. CREW ELECTED TO RETURN AND WAS CLRED BACK TO FLL BY MIAMI DEP. UPON BEING QUESTIONED BY MIA APCH REGARDING OUR SITUATION CREW ADVISED MIA OF HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE AND INTENT TO RETURN FOR PRECAUTIONARY LNDG. HANDOFF TO FLL TWR WAS MADE APPROX 3 MI E OF 27L AT 1000' MSL. TWR ADVISED THAT ACFT WAS CLRED TO LAND ON 27L BUT SUFFICIENT DISTANCE WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR PROPER DSCNT. CREW REFUSED 27L AND ADVISED TWR THAT THEY HAD EXPECTED 09L. TWR CLRED ACFT FOR RIGHT DOWNWIND TO 09R AND ASKED IF ACFT WAS EXPERIENCING AN EMER. CREW RESPONDED IN THE NEGATIVE AND ADVISED TWR OF HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE ON #1 ENGINE. AT THIS TIME OIL TEMPERATURE WAS STILL SLIGHTLY HIGH AND OIL PRESSURE WAS STILL STEADY. CREW EXPECTED A LEFT 270 DEG TURN FROM A HDG OF APPROX NORTH WHILE AGAIN REQUESTING 09L. TWR FINALLY CLRED ACFT FOR 09L. WHILE TURNING BASE/FINAL A WITNESS OF GND REPORTED SMOKE TRAILING FROM ACFT'S LEFT ENGINE. WHEN CREW REDUCED POWER ON SHORT FINAL #1 ENGINE RPM REDUCED APPROX 500 RPM. AT NO TIME BEFORE THIS POINT DID THE CREW FEEL THAT AN EMER SHOULD BE DECLARED. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE #1 ENGINE SEIZED IN A NEAR FEATHERED POSITION.
