Narrative:

Climbing from takeoff; talking to approach for VFR flight following; [the] fuel pump light came on; then within seconds flameout. I looked for suitable landing runway; decided [a nearby airport was the] safest option. Made it to airport but not high enough to make safe landing; [so I] elected to land gear down in cotton field nearby. No injuries; minor damage to landing gear; plane repairable. No injuries other than minor sore back from rough landing. Was surprised to learn fuel pump was very old although it [passed] annual inspections. I recommend all jet warbird owners find out how old their engine vital parts are and replace before 10 years old. Also controller continued to talk to me while I had my hands full [and] this was very distracting while I seriously had my hands full.
