Narrative:
On approach to wvl on VOR/DME approach I experienced a problem with the left landing gear. I missed the approach after reaching VFR conditions and climbed up requesting 5000' to VFR conditions where I knew the ice would come off. While at 5000' I entered the hold and attempted to fix the landing gear problem. The autoplt failed to hold altitude and heading while I pumped the landing gear down and I was so centered on the landing gear that I failed to notice the aircraft climbing and turning off course. When I realized what had happened I corrected the aircraft. I was unable to extend the landing gear and made a landing with the left gear up. There was minor damage and no one was hurt. The incident was reported to FAA and then classified a incident.
