Narrative:
Descending out of 8000' to 5000' during descent at 5300 MSL, approach control asked our altitude. I replied '5300'. Approach control stated 'you were cleared to 6000'. The co-pilot was flying this leg and agreed with me that we both remember my reading back to the controller 5000', which agreed with the altitude I had set into the altitude alerter. The WX was poor VFR with strong xwinds and turbulence. On the clearance in question the controller gave it very quickly. My readback was equally quick. I am sure that this was the (contributing) factor.
