Narrative:
Upon initial climbout departing ord; ATC instructed us to proceed direct to the fix 'pmpkn.' the flight plan in the FMS was entered with the fix 'pmpkn' spelled incorrectly; which was not caught during preflight planning. Upon selecting 'navigation' with the autopilot engaged; the aircraft began flying towards the incorrect fix. We then realized the aircraft proceeding the wrong direction and began to turn back the correct way towards 'pmpkn;' at which time ATC queried us as to where we were going. We told ATC that we were correcting course to proceed direct 'pmpkn.'the fix 'pmpkn' was incorrectly spelled when entered into the FMS and was not caught by either pilot during preflight. It is important to verify that all fixes entered into the flight plan be verified against the applicable charts for correct spelling during preflight; and any time the flight plan is amended.
