Narrative:
On the reposition to base leg of a flight; I detected movement of the left engine cowl as I began to taxi for takeoff. I shut down; exited the aircraft and secured the left engine cowl. I inspected the rest of the aircraft; got back in and flew the return leg.the left side of the aircraft was away from the ramp lighting. I failed to use a flashlight on my preflight walk around and did not detect the unsecured cowl.
