Narrative:
While overflying ZZZ enroute from ZZZ1 to ZZZ2; I experienced a sudden; complete failure of the avionics (i.e.; all communication and navigation radios; transponder; and GPS). I had just contacted ZZZ's north tower when the failure occurred. I immediately executed a 180-degree turn to set up for a right traffic pattern to ZZZ's runway xy; which is located on the south field (i.e.; the general aviation side of the airport). As I was setting up for my downwind leg; I used my iphone to obtain the number for ZZZ tower. Calling the line revealed that it was busy; so receiving a clearance over the phone was not an option. As I flew the downwind and base legs of the pattern; I looked at the tower multiple times. My objective was to see a steady green light gun signal indicating that I was cleared to land. I do not recall if I saw or if I did not see such a light gun signal. At that point; most of my attention was devoted to scanning for traffic (I did not see any in the pattern) and getting the airplane on the ground safely. I certainly did not see red light gun signals at any time. I proceeded to land the airplane; vacate the runway; and taxi to [an] FBO. Once there; I telephoned the tower and relayed all of this information to them. They said that they had; in fact; shot me a green light gun signal indicating that I was cleared to land; and they further said that--though I did not recall if I had seen it or if I had not seen it--they would assume that I had seen it since I landed. After determining that I could not fix the failure; I called the tower again and asked them if I could return to ZZZ1 without avionics. They agreed to this; stating that they would give me clearances with light gun signals. I also informed ZZZ1 tower of my intentions and telephoned them prior to my departure from ZZZ. I received a steady green light gun signal at ZZZ; after which I departed and turned toward ZZZ1. When I was approximately 10 miles away; I received my landing clearance over the phone from ZZZ1 tower and landed without issue. Once I had parked the airplane; I telephoned each airport's tower to inform them of the successful outcome.
