Narrative:
I was flying by myself and after a run-up by the checklist; I asked for and was cleared for takeoff on runway 2 for left closed traffic. As I turned downwind I lost power to the engine. After briefly trying to triage the issue; I realized that due to my altitude the best thing to do was to just put the airplane down. I then told the tower that I lost power. The tower immediately cleared me to land on runway 20. I landed on runway 20 and then taxied onto the grass area just off the runway. There was no damage to the airplane and I the only occupant was unhurt.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA32 pilot reported engine failure turning downwind after takeoff and informs the Tower. The Tower clears the reporter to land on the opposite runway; which is accomplished successfully.
