Narrative:
While level at 17;000 feet heading east toward ZZZ; about 65 miles from the airport; first got a call from the controller about traffic below us. We then got a TA followed by an RA. The TCAS instructed us to climb (we climbed from 17;000 feet to 17;500 feet before descending back to 17;000 feet after clear of conflict.) we did it and on the TCAS the other plane got as close as 300 feet. After our escape maneuver was completed the TCAS said we were clear of conflict. We told the controller and he said his radar showed us as close as 500 feet from traffic. The rest of the flight was uneventful.the other traffic flew too close to us when we were wings level at the instructed 17;000 feet. The controller could have given us an earlier warning about traffic. The traffic was climbing from right below us; so we never saw him.
