Narrative:

First officer copied clearance to descend from FL240 to FL200, and then initiated descent. I was off #1 VHF copying ATIS, returned to center frequency to hear center calling 'traffic alert, turn left heading 230 degrees.' we looked up to see an airliner pass our 3 O'clock, approximately 2 mi and slightly higher. Called center once on the ground and initiated inquiry. Suspect we were cleared to FL220, read back FL20 and it was not caught. Classic readback/hearback problem. Lesson: don't leave ATC frequencys to 1 crew member.
