Narrative:
We were about 100 NM out of ATC when ATC gave us holding instructions to hold at macey, rt, 20 NM legs at 28000'. I entered holding and for about 30 mins everything was fine. As I was coming inbound toward foothills I looked down as I always do to check my miles. I should have turned at 9 NM and I was at 11 NM. At that time the first officer and I started to take about holding and alternate fuel minimums. As I looked down for my mi check it was reading 9 NM and increasing. I told the copilot something was wrong and I looked over to my VOR needle. It was pointing behind me. As I started my right turn to get back on track center came up and told me to proceed inbound on arrival route to atl and contact approach control. Nothing was said by me or center about being out of holding pattern airspace.
