Narrative:
We were given clearance to '...hold at magoo as published FL290.' upon entering the hold at FL290 (bdf 215/87 mi right turns) center asked if we were in a right turn. When we confirmed a right turn we were told to descend immediately to FL280, traffic at 1 O'clock 12 mi. We complied immediately, then confirmed that we were cleared to hold as published. Center replied that we were cleared as published and he confirmed that we had and that he had made a mistake and 'things had been a little hectic for us and him. I said I just wanted to be sure we hadn't done something wrong. The only thing of consequence to come out of the event was passenger discomfort due to the sudden push over to comply with ATC.
