Narrative:

On takeoff both engines recorded an egt max temp exceedance. Plane had a history for engine 1. Once out of the takeoff phase and in climb phase notified dispatch and maintenance. First response was to continue as their observation showed event was within maintenance parameters. Both engines were operating normally and all indications were stable.later during the flight maintenance advised they would like for us to divert. After discussing with dispatch I agreed that diverting to an enroute station was reasonable. My concern with returning to the departure airport was an overweight landing 30;000 pounds over max landing weight. The possibility of the fuse plugs blowing and tires deflating thus disabling the aircraft on the ground was high. Did a phone patch with dispatch and we discussed the situation and the options available. Reconfirmed with maintenance control that they were ok with continuing to an enroute station and the dispatcher and I then agreed on a plan with a diversion to the maintenance station. Landed normally at 10;500 pounds overweight.
