Narrative:
Scheduled flight with 9 other balloons [for] purpose [of] completing a 'sanctioned task' for bfa competitive point scoring. Pilot arrived late for task briefing, but managed takeoff with other balloons. Once up in air, realized that flight profile would carry through northeast edge of carswell AFB and western edge of meacham field. Since flight through those areas could involve conflicts between high speed and low speed aircraft and since flight operation was conducted over congested area pilot chose to violate 91.79 and exit air traffic area and terminate flight at earliest possible opportunity. Pilot erred by flying unfamiliar territory and could have avoided by preflight planning using sectional and TCA appropriate for area of flight operation.

Title: HOT AIR BALLOON PLT PENETRATES FWH AND FTW ATA, ALSO FLIES TOO LOW OVER, AND LANDS IN POPULATED AREA.
Narrative: SCHEDULED FLT WITH 9 OTHER BALLOONS [FOR] PURPOSE [OF] COMPLETING A 'SANCTIONED TASK' FOR BFA COMPETITIVE POINT SCORING. SINCE FLT THROUGH THOSE AREAS COULD INVOLVE CONFLICTS BTWN HIGH SPD AND LOW SPD ACFT AND SINCE FLT OPERATION WAS CONDUCTED OVER CONGESTED AREA PLT CHOSE TO VIOLATE 91.79 AND EXIT ATA AND TERMINATE FLT AT EARLIEST POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY. PLT ERRED BY FLYING UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY AND COULD HAVE AVOIDED BY PREFLT PLANNING USING SECTIONAL AND TCA APPROPRIATE FOR AREA OF FLT OPERATION.
