Narrative:

We pushed back and started the #2 engine for single engine taxi to [the] runway. The ramp was pretty busy and the ramp controller was as well. After [another aircraft] taxied away; I was told by ramp to make a right turn out and follow [the aircraft] that was already traveling west bound behind us. I looked left and saw where that plane was. I started my turn to the right and was mainly concerned with another plane that was parked on the green line abeam the tower. We weren't close but I was looking at that plane when [the] first officer (first officer) simultaneously yelled stop and hit the brakes from his side because of a regional jet that was taxiing by from the right. I could not see him due to the angle we were at. He was moving pretty quickly and was not stopping for us. We were not going fast (under 10 knots) because I was turning into the engine and it was a slow turn. The ramp controller said he apologized for not telling us and it was 'his mistake'. We made a PA to explain what had happened and first officer asked the flight attendants if anyone was hurt. No one said they were hurt; so we continued on.
