Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff; tower reported seeing smoke from the left engine. Crew checked all flight indicators and instruments but saw no other indication of fire or smoke. Crew asked tower if smoke was still visible and tower respond that smoke was still seen coming from left engine. Crew requested a left downwind and returned to runway xxl for landing. Once aircraft was stopped; airport fire department inspected aircraft and reported no indications of smoke of fire. Crew taxied aircraft back to gate for maintenance inspection. Unknown [cause]. Maintenance inspection in progress.

Title: A300 Captain reported the Controller indicated the left engine was smoking immediately after takeoff. Even though the engine operation appeared normal to the crew; the flight returned to the departure airport for a maintenance examination.
