Narrative:
I was in a PA-22 coming in for landing. Wind was [a 60 degree crosswind at] 17-23 knot gusts. I went for a wheel landing and landed. The wind was gusting pretty hard and blew my tail wheel right. The plane went left into the grass. I hit a runway light with the rear of my plane. Broke the light; and messed up the right side of the horizontal stabilizer and ripped the skin on rear of plane. I then taxied down the runway to park and tied it down.I checked the metars and tafs before [takeoff]. I [noticed] the forecast showed strong winds. If I [had] fueled at my last stop; I would have made my entire flight [nonstop]. But I chose to stop for fuel midway. I wanted to stop when I shouldn't have. Winds were a little calmer [at destination] with more favorable runways. I had a direct crosswind with one runway. I made [a] horrible decision. I tried to land with a strong direct crosswind in a little airplane. I didn't have much experience in that airplane or a tail wheel. The whole experience humbled me; embarrassed me; and scared me. I don't ever want to experience that again and I will take the appropriate actions to correct my actions and make better decisions.
