Narrative:
During the flight; cruising at FL400; we experienced a fuel imbalance warning. We noticed that we had an imbalance over 1000 pounds between wing tanks and increasing. The [right tank] was reading approximately 6770 and the [left tank] was reading 8200. We got into the checklist and started to determine if we had a fuel leak. The checklist had us start a timer and determine whether a 500 pound imbalance occurred within 30 minutes. Within six minutes we had an additional 500 pound imbalance; causing a 2000 pound imbalance between tanks. The checklist instructed us to secure the number two engine to stop the fuel leak. We performed the QRH procedures; notified ATC; notified dispatch; and diverted to [a suitable alternate]. We landed without incident; and after a check by the fire department; taxied into the gate.
