Narrative:
I called gcn ground for a clearance to taxi to the active runway. I didn't receive a clearance, so I called a second time. After I let go of the microphone switch I heard, 'taxi to 2-1,' which I did. After completing all before takeoff checks, I proceeded to call the tower for takeoff clearance. Again I received no response--so I called again for takeoff clearance. As soon as I let go of the microphone button I heard the word 'hold.' at this point I was not fully concentrating on what the controller meant and I assumed he said position and hold. I transmitted call sign and taxied into position. About 5 seconds later I heard an atx small transport Y say that he was going around. At that point I realized what had happened. I then called tower and said, 'I thought you said position and hold.' he replied, 'negative.' I said to 'hold position.' I replied that I was sorry. The atx small transport Y passed safely over the top of my aircraft and then tower proceeded to clear me for takeoff. I think part of the problem was that our assistant chief pilot always wants us (pilots) to hurry and get going, because we're on a time schedule. I allowed myself to get rushed and did not give myself time to figure out what was really being said. I assumed the tower said position and hold because the last and only work I heard was 'hold.' I now realize I should have said 'position and hold' and the tower could have realized I was about to make a mistake and stop me. I normally repeat my clrncs back, but the time that I didn't was the time it got me. I was trying to keep up with the assistant chief pilot, who has done this job for about a yr, which I have only been doing the job for 2 months. I realize that I have to go at my own pace, not somebody else's pace.

Title: SIGHTSEEING ATX TAXIS TO POSITION AND CUTS OFF LNDG TRAFFIC AT GCN.
Narrative: I CALLED GCN GND FOR A CLRNC TO TAXI TO THE ACTIVE RWY. I DIDN'T RECEIVE A CLRNC, SO I CALLED A SECOND TIME. AFTER I LET GO OF THE MIC SWITCH I HEARD, 'TAXI TO 2-1,' WHICH I DID. AFTER COMPLETING ALL BEFORE TKOF CHKS, I PROCEEDED TO CALL THE TWR FOR TKOF CLRNC. AGAIN I RECEIVED NO RESPONSE--SO I CALLED AGAIN FOR TKOF CLRNC. AS SOON AS I LET GO OF THE MIC BUTTON I HEARD THE WORD 'HOLD.' AT THIS POINT I WAS NOT FULLY CONCENTRATING ON WHAT THE CTLR MEANT AND I ASSUMED HE SAID POS AND HOLD. I XMITTED CALL SIGN AND TAXIED INTO POS. ABOUT 5 SECS LATER I HEARD AN ATX SMT Y SAY THAT HE WAS GOING AROUND. AT THAT POINT I REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I THEN CALLED TWR AND SAID, 'I THOUGHT YOU SAID POS AND HOLD.' HE REPLIED, 'NEGATIVE.' I SAID TO 'HOLD POS.' I REPLIED THAT I WAS SORRY. THE ATX SMT Y PASSED SAFELY OVER THE TOP OF MY ACFT AND THEN TWR PROCEEDED TO CLR ME FOR TKOF. I THINK PART OF THE PROB WAS THAT OUR ASSISTANT CHIEF PLT ALWAYS WANTS US (PLTS) TO HURRY AND GET GOING, BECAUSE WE'RE ON A TIME SCHEDULE. I ALLOWED MYSELF TO GET RUSHED AND DID NOT GIVE MYSELF TIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS REALLY BEING SAID. I ASSUMED THE TWR SAID POS AND HOLD BECAUSE THE LAST AND ONLY WORK I HEARD WAS 'HOLD.' I NOW REALIZE I SHOULD HAVE SAID 'POS AND HOLD' AND THE TWR COULD HAVE REALIZED I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A MISTAKE AND STOP ME. I NORMALLY REPEAT MY CLRNCS BACK, BUT THE TIME THAT I DIDN'T WAS THE TIME IT GOT ME. I WAS TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE ASSISTANT CHIEF PLT, WHO HAS DONE THIS JOB FOR ABOUT A YR, WHICH I HAVE ONLY BEEN DOING THE JOB FOR 2 MONTHS. I REALIZE THAT I HAVE TO GO AT MY OWN PACE, NOT SOMEBODY ELSE'S PACE.
