Narrative:
IFR flight from clintonville, wi to akron. Advised of light to moderate icing in clouds. Expected to overfly potential icing conditions. Kept climbing to stay on top. At 13000' started to enter tops. Asked for descent to 7000'. At 8500' started to pick up ice quickly. Asked for further descent and was cleared to 6000'. Still picking up ice rapidly at 6500'. Asked for 4000' and vectors to tol express. Approach cleared to 4000' and then for ILS 23 approach. Windscreen cleared of ice during approach and landed west/O further incident. Upon landing, wing leading edges had 1/4-1/3' of ice. This was picked up in no more than 2-3 mins while descending through an icing zone that was 4000' thick. Had expected to find cloud free (and ice free) layers, but was IMC from 13000' MSL to 1200' AGL. This trip was already delayed 1 day because of potential icing. Lessons: maintain 2 avenues of escape in potential icing; i.e. Get above it or be able to thaw off below it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA, CRUISING IFR, IS UNABLE TO STAY ON TOP AND ENCOUNTERS ICING IN CLOUD. PRECAUTIONARY LNDG.
Narrative: IFR FLT FROM CLINTONVILLE, WI TO AKRON. ADVISED OF LIGHT TO MODERATE ICING IN CLOUDS. EXPECTED TO OVERFLY POTENTIAL ICING CONDITIONS. KEPT CLBING TO STAY ON TOP. AT 13000' STARTED TO ENTER TOPS. ASKED FOR DSCNT TO 7000'. AT 8500' STARTED TO PICK UP ICE QUICKLY. ASKED FOR FURTHER DSCNT AND WAS CLRED TO 6000'. STILL PICKING UP ICE RAPIDLY AT 6500'. ASKED FOR 4000' AND VECTORS TO TOL EXPRESS. APCH CLRED TO 4000' AND THEN FOR ILS 23 APCH. WINDSCREEN CLRED OF ICE DURING APCH AND LANDED W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. UPON LNDG, WING LEADING EDGES HAD 1/4-1/3' OF ICE. THIS WAS PICKED UP IN NO MORE THAN 2-3 MINS WHILE DSNDING THROUGH AN ICING ZONE THAT WAS 4000' THICK.
