Narrative:
We were taxiing for takeoff. Ground cleared us to taxi for 12L. At taxiway B, we were 'cleared to taxi to 12L, follow the large transport, hurry across 12R.' a I switched to tower frequency, tower said that since we were already on runway 6, to turn right and hold short of runway 12L. We observed an aircraft taxiing into position on runway 6 and the aircraft we were following quickly taxiing forward on runway 6. We had gone past what would have been a hold line, but there is no hold line painted on the active runway. Tower asked if we were holding short of 12L. Before we could response, the jet on final for 12L said he was going around since it looked like the runway was infringed. We then said we had taxied too far and were cleared to takeoff on 12L, for an uneventful flight. Errors: confusing taxi routing to 12L, clearing us to follow someone else. Should ensure all directions are given with all players on frequency (us, ground, oth aircraft, tower).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MLG INADVERTENTLY INFRINGED ON ACTIVE RWY CAUSING GO AROUND.
Narrative: WE WERE TAXIING FOR TKOF. GND CLRED US TO TAXI FOR 12L. AT TXWY B, WE WERE 'CLRED TO TAXI TO 12L, FOLLOW THE LGT, HURRY ACROSS 12R.' A I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ, TWR SAID THAT SINCE WE WERE ALREADY ON RWY 6, TO TURN RIGHT AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12L. WE OBSERVED AN ACFT TAXIING INTO POS ON RWY 6 AND THE ACFT WE WERE FOLLOWING QUICKLY TAXIING FORWARD ON RWY 6. WE HAD GONE PAST WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A HOLD LINE, BUT THERE IS NO HOLD LINE PAINTED ON THE ACTIVE RWY. TWR ASKED IF WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF 12L. BEFORE WE COULD RESPONSE, THE JET ON FINAL FOR 12L SAID HE WAS GOING AROUND SINCE IT LOOKED LIKE THE RWY WAS INFRINGED. WE THEN SAID WE HAD TAXIED TOO FAR AND WERE CLRED TO TKOF ON 12L, FOR AN UNEVENTFUL FLT. ERRORS: CONFUSING TAXI ROUTING TO 12L, CLRING US TO FOLLOW SOMEONE ELSE. SHOULD ENSURE ALL DIRECTIONS ARE GIVEN WITH ALL PLAYERS ON FREQ (US, GND, OTH ACFT, TWR).
