Narrative:

We were in cruise flight at FL370 en route to iad when ATC ordered an immediate 30 degree right turn. They asked us several times to continue the turn (with great emphasis). They also turned an air carrier aircraft to the left. It appeared that we were on converging courses. We did not see the other aircraft until the conflict was over. We also offered to climb to FL390, which was approved. It appears that the incident was a 'screw-up' on the part of ATC. I wonder if the ATC person got that feeling in the pit of his gut like we get when we believe we screwed up and may be violated or worse.
