Narrative:
With all required checklists complete, flight was cleared for takeoff. Very shortly after power was set at takeoff thrust a loud bang was heard from right side of the aircraft. An abort was initiated. During the abort the first officer noticed that the #2 engine had failed, N1, N2 were approximately 0. After pulling onto the high speed taxiway, tower called to tell us that the #2 engine and the right wing were on fire. There were no indications of fire in the cockpit. An aircraft evacuate/evacuation was called for and initiated after the engines were shut down. The fire extinguishing system was activated for the #2 engine. All 130 passenger were evacd west/O incident. When we heard the loud bang, we thought a tire had blown. Then when the #2 engine INS showed an engine failure, we completed the abort with that in mind. The subsequent tower call of an engine and wing on fire caught us somewhat by surprise, although all subsequent actions and the evacuate/evacuation were completed in a timely manner.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG EXPERIENCES ENGINE FAILURE AND FIRE ON TKOF. TKOF ABORTED AND ACFT EVACUATED.
Narrative: WITH ALL REQUIRED CHKLISTS COMPLETE, FLT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. VERY SHORTLY AFTER PWR WAS SET AT TKOF THRUST A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD FROM RIGHT SIDE OF THE ACFT. AN ABORT WAS INITIATED. DURING THE ABORT THE F/O NOTICED THAT THE #2 ENG HAD FAILED, N1, N2 WERE APPROX 0. AFTER PULLING ONTO THE HIGH SPD TXWY, TWR CALLED TO TELL US THAT THE #2 ENG AND THE RIGHT WING WERE ON FIRE. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF FIRE IN THE COCKPIT. AN ACFT EVAC WAS CALLED FOR AND INITIATED AFTER THE ENGS WERE SHUT DOWN. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYS WAS ACTIVATED FOR THE #2 ENG. ALL 130 PAX WERE EVACD W/O INCIDENT. WHEN WE HEARD THE LOUD BANG, WE THOUGHT A TIRE HAD BLOWN. THEN WHEN THE #2 ENG INS SHOWED AN ENG FAILURE, WE COMPLETED THE ABORT WITH THAT IN MIND. THE SUBSEQUENT TWR CALL OF AN ENG AND WING ON FIRE CAUGHT US SOMEWHAT BY SURPRISE, ALTHOUGH ALL SUBSEQUENT ACTIONS AND THE EVAC WERE COMPLETED IN A TIMELY MANNER.
