Narrative:
San departure cleared us direct to pgy vs flying the published SID. We made the left turn of more than 180 degrees, rolling out on what turned out to be direct to an ADF tuned by the previous crew, and left to the ADF position on the RMI. Departure corrected our course back to the right. Total overshot caused a deviation from course of 6-6 mi too far north.

Narrative: SAN DEP CLRED US DIRECT TO PGY VS FLYING THE PUBLISHED SID.
