Narrative:
Climbing through approximately 9000 ft the cockpit crew noticed a burning smell. Within a few seconds the flight attendant called the flight deck to report smoke in the cabin. The captain immediately gave the flight attendant instructions to prepare for landing. First officer called ATC to request assistance and air return to [departure airport]. Captain called for cabin fire or smoke [procedure]. After running the QRH checklists the smell began to subside. We quickly prepared for an overweight landing. Landed uneventfully and taxied to the gate. Threats were low altitude and unidentified source of smoke in the cabin. This led to a rushed timeline to accomplish QRH procedures and checklists while preparing for an emergency overweight landing.
