Narrative:

On descent at approximately 8;000 feet in IMC and icing conditions; first officer noted a large crack in the right front windshield. There appeared to be smoldering in a small portion of the crack. No warning or caution light accompanied this event. There was no smoke and the captain did not smell any odor of significance. The windshield heat was immediately turned off and lower altitude was requested.approximately 30 seconds from initially observing the crack; the windshield suddenly cracked in a spider-web fashion accompanied by a loud noise. Smoke goggles were immediately donned and [ATC was advised] with immediate diversion to [nearby airport]; which was four minutes away. First officer transferred controls to captain and the flight attendant was notified to prepare cabin for immediate arrival. Emergency; abnormal checklist and normal checklists were all accomplished prior to landing.
