Narrative:

[We were] at cruise altitude 9000 ft when crew became aware of massive sudden engine vibration. Ip (instructor pilot) (PIC) immediately turned fuel pumps on; mixture full rich on both engines. Immediately after; right engine exploded without noticeable fire. Ip took controls from pui (pilot under instruction) (student pilot) to maintain aircraft control; and to attempt to feather right prop and secure engine. Right prop did not feather and was wind milling and wobbling. Ip called center and [advised ATC] of engine failure and unable to feather prop. Squawked 7700. Ip asked for nearest airport notification. Ip chose [a nearby alternate] as we were 20nm southwest of airfield and on 'left base' for runway 01. ATC concurred and facilitated emergency vehicles on field for emergency arrival. Ip flew aircraft in degraded un-feathered conditions for safe landing. Aircraft was able to exit runway; but unable to make left turn to clear hold short marking of runway exit. Airport operations met aircraft.

IP asked for nearest airport notification. IP chose [a nearby alternate] as we were 20nm SW of airfield and on 'left base' for RWY 01. ATC concurred and facilitated emergency vehicles on field for emergency arrival. IP flew aircraft in degraded un-feathered conditions for safe landing. Aircraft was able to exit RWY; but unable to make left turn to clear hold short marking of RWY exit. Airport OPS met aircraft.
