Narrative:
While working the assistant radar position we had a civil medium large transport from sjc to rno with a transition over sac VORTAC. We had a situation elsewhere in the sector that took our attention away for about 5 mins. The situation was a possible loss of separation between 2 civil jets. While that was happening, we let the medium large transport into another sector without a handoff. About 20 mins later the next sector saw the target of our aircraft and stopped another aircraft to maintain separation. Another ATC facility was involved with our separation problem. There was a lack of communication that increased our workload to the point that we let our other traffic get away from us.
