Narrative:

Descending through approximately 18000 feet we noticed a strong odor. A short time after the odor started we noticed thick continuous smoke coming from the lower left corner of the left front windscreen. We immediately turned off the windshield heat and executed the smoke in cockpit check list. We [advised] ATC and asked for direct to [an alternate] because we were only 25 miles from the airport. The smoke subsided eventually and we landed visually. We were met by airport fire and rescue and were escorted to parking. Upon parking we immediately completed the shutdown checklist and exited the aircraft due to persistent fumes and odor.
