Narrative:
After clearing the runway in ZZZ; tower advised we were to call a land line number because of a possible deviation. Neither the first officer nor I had any idea (or could envision) what they were possibly referring to. After completion of the parking checklist at the gate; I then contacted our dispatcher and asked for the ATC desk and then explained the situation. After talking with someone; I then learned that TRACON said we crossed zzzzz intersection on the STAR at 8700 ft instead of the published 8000 ft. The aircraft was in VNAV path the whole descent with no scratchpad advisories. The whole VNAV system needs scrapping; sids and stars are too complex; and aircraft software is way too lax.
