Narrative:
The inbound aircraft was delayed approximately 9 hours for a maintenance issue. We asked dispatch if they could tell us the maintenance reason for the delay while we were planning our flight. We boarded the aircraft and proceeded with our preflight duties. I sent a message to [maintenance] to find out what the issue was for the previous flights delay as there was nothing in the [paperwork] that showed why the aircraft was delayed for 9 hours. [Maintenance] replied; ['under our new maintenance tracking system; we can't find that information.'] so a 747-400 that has a 9 hour maintenance delay has no visible record for the pilots to find out what was wrong with the aircraft. We find this unacceptable. Also in the [paperwork]; it says 'both engines serviced' which is unacceptable as the 747-400 has [four] engines.
