Narrative:

We were given instructions to descend from cruise and maintain 10000'. We were told to cross intersection at 17000', descend and maintain 10000', and later, to maintain 9000'. We leveled off at what we thought was the proper altitude at the proper time. Approach control called and asked if we could make the descent okay. Only at that time did we realize we had misread our altimeter by 10000'. These were the old type altimeters which are easy to misread. We explained that we had made a mistake and hurried on down. The controller understood and explained there was no problem since there was no traffic in the area.
