Narrative:
While being vectored for an approach at 6;000 feet by new york TRACON; I noticed a sudden flash from my left just as we completed a turn. I instinctively looked left and noticed 2-3 quick flashes of green light that seemed like a laser that missed the aircraft followed by a short burst of red light that hit the aircraft. I reported the unauthorized laser illumination to the ATC controller who passed the info along to following aircraft. No injuries received. I then realized that due to the color and nature of the illumination as well as what seemed like a lower power than I would have anticipated; I figure what illuminated us was christmas laser lights pointing skyward. If this is the case then I might suggest that even though this was probably an unintentional situation the lights are very distracting.
