Narrative:
Aircraft encountered severe wave at FL380. The wave onset with no warning or indications and resulted in a 35 knot overspeed accompanied with master warning and siren. With the autopilot engaged; the aircraft made an uncommanded climb of approximately 1000 feet with FMA LNAV and VNAV blanked. The aircraft was brought back to normal flight with selection of flch; heading select; and quick and judicious use of speed brake and throttle closure by the flying pilot. Flight directors were reset and LNAV and VNAV reestablished. We had only light turbulence throughout the event and no issues with the cabin.transmissions were made to aircraft in the area. Several aircraft in the area experienced the same flight conditions.
