Narrative:

Just west of the mxq VOR; in IMC conditions; we encountered a pocket of heavy precipitation (not painting on either radar screen) accompanied with severe turbulence and loss of aircraft control. The updraft disengaged the auto-pilot and yaw damper which resulted in a vertical climb of 4;800 ft per minute. Control was regained at 33;800 ft. The captain (pilot monitoring) was able to then notify ATC of the altitude deviation and within a few minutes we provided a more complete PIREP to the controllers.
