Narrative:
Engine failed while on 6 NM final for runway 27R at oak. Declared emergency, turned toward hwd (which was 2 NM south) and landed on runway 10L at hwd. Landing was uneventful--there was no damage to aircraft, property or occupants, although hwd tower had to clear the area. The engine was intermittent during the approach, and by T/D was running again at idle. Water was drained from the fuel strainer and fuel tank quick drains. A mechanic checked the engine and found no other reason for failure. The flight was a training flight from oak to luk for touch and go's. The student performed the preflight inspection and stated he checked the fuel drains and found no contamination. The plane departed with full fuel and flew approximately 1.6 hours before engine failure.

Title: SMA IN FLT INSTRUCTION SUFFERS ENGINE FAILURE ON APCH TO OAK, DECLARES EMERGENCY AND LANDS SAFELY AT HWD.
Narrative: ENG FAILED WHILE ON 6 NM FINAL FOR RWY 27R AT OAK. DECLARED EMER, TURNED TOWARD HWD (WHICH WAS 2 NM S) AND LANDED ON RWY 10L AT HWD. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL--THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO ACFT, PROPERTY OR OCCUPANTS, ALTHOUGH HWD TWR HAD TO CLR THE AREA. THE ENG WAS INTERMITTENT DURING THE APCH, AND BY T/D WAS RUNNING AGAIN AT IDLE. WATER WAS DRAINED FROM THE FUEL STRAINER AND FUEL TANK QUICK DRAINS. A MECH CHKED THE ENG AND FOUND NO OTHER REASON FOR FAILURE. THE FLT WAS A TRNING FLT FROM OAK TO LUK FOR TOUCH AND GO'S. THE STUDENT PERFORMED THE PREFLT INSPECTION AND STATED HE CHKED THE FUEL DRAINS AND FOUND NO CONTAMINATION. THE PLANE DEPARTED WITH FULL FUEL AND FLEW APPROX 1.6 HRS BEFORE ENG FAILURE.
