Narrative:
Departed ZZZ for local flight. During flight; 7 miles west of ZZZ and at 6;500 MSL; began to lose engine power. Attempted to return to airport; at approximately 1.5 miles from airport engine stopped and was forced to turn back to a less developed area and land. On landing; struck a dirt berm and the gear was damaged.
