Narrative:

Getting vectored with approach control for ILS in IMC; level at 3;000; we got an abrupt GPWS caution terrain and pull up warning; which stopped after a few seconds. The warning continuously reoccurred throughout the approach until I selected terrain inhibit since it was extremely distracting. Before doing so; we verified our position; asked ATC if they had any low altitude alerts; and selected the terrain display which did not show any terrain. We were level throughout the alerts. On the initial alert I disconnected the autopilot and was ready to begin the escape maneuver but the alert stopped and I remained at the assigned altitude. The first officer and I determined the warnings were erroneous and I made a maintenance write up after landing.
