Narrative:

Briefed IFR departure as a heading until 4 DME, right turn to 070 degrees, cross a radial (280 dgs) at or above 4000' and below 7000'. After takeoff, raised gear, called departure control. First officer called for, '1/2 climb rate, flaps up, climb power,' and departure control said, 'turn left at 2 DME to 095 degrees, intercept ? Radio off of ? VOR and climb to ? Altitude, ' and to then proceed to another VOR and then as filed. At XA30 in the morning I wasn't in the right mood and just told him we would turn to 095 degrees and call him back. I thought the ATC system went through a communication/instruction purge a few yrs ago to avoid all those changes at a critical phase of flight. If not, they need to. Yes, I probably could have started taking notes at 1000', but is it safe? Not in my mind.
