Narrative:

While taxiing into gate area (first officer was taxiing), I was looking out left side of aircraft to ensure adequate wing clearance. I thought the first officer has stopped the aircraft in an appropriate spot and shut down left engine so as to allow deplaning to occur. (Normally the first officer will get out to open the door and start deplaning the aircraft while the captain shuts down the right engine and secures the systems.) as I was shutting down the right engine, but before the first officer had moved out of his seat, I noticed the ramp agent wanted us up further. I simply allowed the aircraft to roll forward approximately 5' to the new spot as I shut down the right engine. In other words, I allowed the aircraft to roll along with both engines shut down. Although this was not in sequence with the checklist, I did it anyway. The checklist calls for brake set before any engine is shut down. I believed it would save time and keep us on schedule, rather than starting an engine back up or better yet, just stopping where I was. The poor judgement was in a large part due to fatigue from the overnight trip I had done. The part 135 regulations allow for reduced rest periods under certain conditions. Since my scheduled flight time for the two days was more than 9 hours I required 11 hours rest that could be reduced to 9 if needed, our company regularly schedules reduced rest as standard. I had gotten off duty at xc:oo pm that previous night and had an xa:56 am departure. This included getting a rental car, driving to hotel, checking in, sleeping, and doing the reverse, all in 9 hours. Scheduled rest! Then preflting duties for a departure a little over 9 hours after I had gotten in the previous night. Several pilots, myself included, have approached scheduling about the minimum rest, stating that we believe it was not the intent of this rule to allow a scheduled reduced rest, simply a way to prevent delays when conditions occur. We have been told that as long as it's legal, it will continue to be scheduled reduced rest on our overnight trips.

Title: FLT CREW OF ACR COMMUTER LTT ALLOWS ACFT TO ROLL WHILE SHUTTING DOWN ENGINES AS THEY PULLED INTO RAMP PARKING SLOT. REPORTER BLAMES FATIGUE ARISING OUT OF COMPANY SCHEDULING PRACTICES.

Narrative: WHILE TAXIING INTO GATE AREA (F/O WAS TAXIING), I WAS LOOKING OUT L SIDE OF ACFT TO ENSURE ADEQUATE WING CLRNC. I THOUGHT THE F/O HAS STOPPED THE ACFT IN AN APPROPRIATE SPOT AND SHUT DOWN L ENG SO AS TO ALLOW DEPLANING TO OCCUR. (NORMALLY THE F/O WILL GET OUT TO OPEN THE DOOR AND START DEPLANING THE ACFT WHILE THE CAPT SHUTS DOWN THE R ENG AND SECURES THE SYSTEMS.) AS I WAS SHUTTING DOWN THE R ENG, BUT BEFORE THE F/O HAD MOVED OUT OF HIS SEAT, I NOTICED THE RAMP AGENT WANTED US UP FURTHER. I SIMPLY ALLOWED THE ACFT TO ROLL FORWARD APPROX 5' TO THE NEW SPOT AS I SHUT DOWN THE R ENG. IN OTHER WORDS, I ALLOWED THE ACFT TO ROLL ALONG WITH BOTH ENGS SHUT DOWN. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS NOT IN SEQUENCE WITH THE CHKLIST, I DID IT ANYWAY. THE CHKLIST CALLS FOR BRAKE SET BEFORE ANY ENG IS SHUT DOWN. I BELIEVED IT WOULD SAVE TIME AND KEEP US ON SCHEDULE, RATHER THAN STARTING AN ENG BACK UP OR BETTER YET, JUST STOPPING WHERE I WAS. THE POOR JUDGEMENT WAS IN A LARGE PART DUE TO FATIGUE FROM THE OVERNIGHT TRIP I HAD DONE. THE PART 135 REGS ALLOW FOR REDUCED REST PERIODS UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. SINCE MY SCHEDULED FLT TIME FOR THE TWO DAYS WAS MORE THAN 9 HRS I REQUIRED 11 HRS REST THAT COULD BE REDUCED TO 9 IF NEEDED, OUR COMPANY REGULARLY SCHEDULES REDUCED REST AS STANDARD. I HAD GOTTEN OFF DUTY AT XC:OO PM THAT PREVIOUS NIGHT AND HAD AN XA:56 AM DEP. THIS INCLUDED GETTING A RENTAL CAR, DRIVING TO HOTEL, CHKING IN, SLEEPING, AND DOING THE REVERSE, ALL IN 9 HRS. SCHEDULED REST! THEN PREFLTING DUTIES FOR A DEP A LITTLE OVER 9 HRS AFTER I HAD GOTTEN IN THE PREVIOUS NIGHT. SEVERAL PLTS, MYSELF INCLUDED, HAVE APCHED SCHEDULING ABOUT THE MINIMUM REST, STATING THAT WE BELIEVE IT WAS NOT THE INTENT OF THIS RULE TO ALLOW A SCHEDULED REDUCED REST, SIMPLY A WAY TO PREVENT DELAYS WHEN CONDITIONS OCCUR. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT AS LONG AS IT'S LEGAL, IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE SCHEDULED REDUCED REST ON OUR OVERNIGHT TRIPS.
