Narrative:

Human factor: we had completed our crew coordination procedures for landing 26R phx and with the airport in sight had been cleared for a visibility about 12 mi northeast of phx at 3000'. Heading west, I set up a downwind just north of phx for what I perceived to be appropriate for landing 26R (but actually 8R). 4 mi out, tower asked if we would be able to land 26R. Realizing my error, I requested a 360 degree to the right to land 26R. They were unable due to traffic so they gave us a vector and turned us back to approach control for vectors to land 26L west/O incident. The main factor which caused the mistake to happen were: lack of sleep and jet lag. While attending a brunch, I was notified XA30 PDT that I would be dhd on flight lax sfo at XG00 PDT to protect flight, sfo-jfk. By the time we arrived at the hotel in north.Y., I had been up for 23 hours. I forced myself out of bed after 5 1/2 hours sleep in order for me to get back to sleep prior to my wake up call to take a limo to ewr (departure the hotel at 0X:00 am south det), having slept only 3 hours, 15 mins the second time I left the hotel for our flight to phx via stl. Needless to say, my diurnal cycle and sleep pattern was really messed up. Contributing factor: first officer on his first line trip after 21 yrs as F/east. An experienced first officer would have brought the error to my attention before the tower called. Solution: I'm going back to flying the line to avoid flying these god-awful hours on reserve! Please do what you can to get the FAA to prevent airlines from scheduling flight crews with little or no regard for the diurnal cycle.

Title: WDB STARTS AN ENTRY FOR A DOWNWIND TO THE WRONG RWY ON A VISUAL APCH. CORRECTED BY TWR AND VECTORED AROUND FOR CORRECT RWY.

Narrative: HUMAN FACTOR: WE HAD COMPLETED OUR CREW COORD PROCS FOR LNDG 26R PHX AND WITH THE ARPT IN SIGHT HAD BEEN CLRED FOR A VIS ABOUT 12 MI NE OF PHX AT 3000'. HDG W, I SET UP A DOWNWIND JUST N OF PHX FOR WHAT I PERCEIVED TO BE APPROPRIATE FOR LNDG 26R (BUT ACTUALLY 8R). 4 MI OUT, TWR ASKED IF WE WOULD BE ABLE TO LAND 26R. REALIZING MY ERROR, I REQUESTED A 360 DEG TO THE RIGHT TO LAND 26R. THEY WERE UNABLE DUE TO TFC SO THEY GAVE US A VECTOR AND TURNED US BACK TO APCH CTL FOR VECTORS TO LAND 26L W/O INCIDENT. THE MAIN FACTOR WHICH CAUSED THE MISTAKE TO HAPPEN WERE: LACK OF SLEEP AND JET LAG. WHILE ATTENDING A BRUNCH, I WAS NOTIFIED XA30 PDT THAT I WOULD BE DHD ON FLT LAX SFO AT XG00 PDT TO PROTECT FLT, SFO-JFK. BY THE TIME WE ARRIVED AT THE HOTEL IN N.Y., I HAD BEEN UP FOR 23 HRS. I FORCED MYSELF OUT OF BED AFTER 5 1/2 HRS SLEEP IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET BACK TO SLEEP PRIOR TO MY WAKE UP CALL TO TAKE A LIMO TO EWR (DEP THE HOTEL AT 0X:00 AM S DET), HAVING SLEPT ONLY 3 HRS, 15 MINS THE SECOND TIME I LEFT THE HOTEL FOR OUR FLT TO PHX VIA STL. NEEDLESS TO SAY, MY DIURNAL CYCLE AND SLEEP PATTERN WAS REALLY MESSED UP. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: F/O ON HIS FIRST LINE TRIP AFTER 21 YRS AS F/E. AN EXPERIENCED F/O WOULD HAVE BROUGHT THE ERROR TO MY ATTN BEFORE THE TWR CALLED. SOLUTION: I'M GOING BACK TO FLYING THE LINE TO AVOID FLYING THESE GOD-AWFUL HRS ON RESERVE! PLEASE DO WHAT YOU CAN TO GET THE FAA TO PREVENT AIRLINES FROM SCHEDULING FLT CREWS WITH LITTLE OR NO REGARD FOR THE DIURNAL CYCLE.
