Narrative:

This occurrence happened just after takeoff from pfn. We were cleared for takeoff on runway 14 with a left turn to a heading of 060 degree and maintain 2000'. After takeoff, pfn tower told us to contact departure (tyndall). Climbing left turn through 1500' for 2000', a single engine aircraft was at our 12:30 to 1 O'clock position. I turned additional 30 degrees to the left. The small aircraft looked as if he was in a turn also. As soon as we contacted departure, they told us about the aircraft. It looked as if it was about 200' to 300' from us. I called pfn tower and asked if they knew about the traffic and they said they did, but did not know it was that close in (about 3 mi from airport). Tower also said that it did not have a transponder and that they didn't know his altitude and exact position.
