Narrative:
Reporting pilot had been requested by aircraft owner/pilot at the controls to accompany him on an IFR flight from shv to new departing XC00. Pilot at controls had received private pilot training from reporting pilot and indicated intention to pursue INS rating. Reporting pilot (cfmei-I) allowed pilot to fly the aircraft. Right departure and climb out through low stratus deck proceeded smoothly. As pilot was leveling off aircraft at assigned altitude of 7000', he experienced spatial disorientation and placed the aircraft in an unusual attitude. Reporting pilot assumed control of aircraft and recovered from 40 degree bank, low airspeed/high power confign at altitude of 7500' and 50 degrees right of course. Contributing distraction at time of level off was shv RAPCON's handoff to ZFW, which pilot at controls attempted to handle as he was leveling off aircraft. Excess altitude was gained due to recovery on the part of the reporting pilot in IMC and reluctance of pilot at controls to relinquish authority over the controls. Callup to ZFW confirmed altitude of 7200' descending to 7000'. Pilot at controls later indicated to reporting pilot a susceptibility to vertigo.
