Narrative:
After landing on runway 26L at phx (night), turning off at C3, we were instructed to call 'ground'. We were making a right turn to the inner taxiway when the first officer and I simultaneously hit the brakes to keep from running into an small transport taxiing wbound on the inner. The small transport had landed in front of us and turned off prior to C3 and was taxiing parallel to runway 26L. We were moving at about 10-12 mph (?). (The next day I observed 2-3' of skid marks.) upon arriving at the gate, I called the tower on the telephone and was told we should have been instructed to hold short of the inner taxiway. I question this because to hold short would place our tail in close proximity to the active runway -- there was another aircraft landing behind us. In defense of the tower and ground, we did land longer than normal and in all probability the tower operator probably planned on us turning off at C5 or C4, which would have put us behind the small transport. I might also say the tower operator and ground control were extremely busy at the time. Earlier in the month I had experienced a conflict on the inner taxiway with another taxiing aircraft, though not near as serious.

Title: ACFT CLEARING RWY TO THE RIGHT ONTO A PARALLEL TXWY CAME IN VERY CLOSE PROX TO ANOTHER ACFT TAXIING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 26L AT PHX (NIGHT), TURNING OFF AT C3, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CALL 'GND'. WE WERE MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO THE INNER TXWY WHEN THE F/O AND I SIMULTANEOUSLY HIT THE BRAKES TO KEEP FROM RUNNING INTO AN SMT TAXIING WBOUND ON THE INNER. THE SMT HAD LANDED IN FRONT OF US AND TURNED OFF PRIOR TO C3 AND WAS TAXIING PARALLEL TO RWY 26L. WE WERE MOVING AT ABOUT 10-12 MPH (?). (THE NEXT DAY I OBSERVED 2-3' OF SKID MARKS.) UPON ARRIVING AT THE GATE, I CALLED THE TWR ON THE TELEPHONE AND WAS TOLD WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE INNER TXWY. I QUESTION THIS BECAUSE TO HOLD SHORT WOULD PLACE OUR TAIL IN CLOSE PROX TO THE ACTIVE RWY -- THERE WAS ANOTHER ACFT LNDG BEHIND US. IN DEFENSE OF THE TWR AND GND, WE DID LAND LONGER THAN NORMAL AND IN ALL PROBABILITY THE TWR OPERATOR PROBABLY PLANNED ON US TURNING OFF AT C5 OR C4, WHICH WOULD HAVE PUT US BEHIND THE SMT. I MIGHT ALSO SAY THE TWR OPERATOR AND GND CTL WERE EXTREMELY BUSY AT THE TIME. EARLIER IN THE MONTH I HAD EXPERIENCED A CONFLICT ON THE INNER TXWY WITH ANOTHER TAXIING ACFT, THOUGH NOT NEAR AS SERIOUS.
