Narrative:
We were leveling at 5000', 10 mi west of smo VOR when TRACON called a traffic alert at 12 O'clock less than a mi. I looked to see small aircraft Y at the same altitude filling the windshield. I pulled up hard and banked right to avoid the traffic. I estimate we missed by 20' vertical and 50' horizontal. When we got on the ground I called la TRACON to find out what caused this to happen. It appears air carrier Z jet was coming over the top of us at the same time causing our data blocks to merge and blocking out the traffic. Needless to say he made a good call considering how busy he was. The traffic in question was in the TCA. I don't know if he had a clearance or not. They had been following him since around edwards AFB. We got some good controllers down there!
