Narrative:
We were level at 3000' inbound to mia's 9R. We were assigned a heading of 360. Were then told about traffic, an mdt, at 1 O'clock, that we were going to follow to 9R. My first officer was flying and I was looking out for the traffic. We were approximately 10-12 mi southwest of the airport. When I saw traffic at about our 1-1:30 position at first I thought he was the traffic we were to follow. After watching him for a while he was heading nwbnd and appeared to be slightly higher than us. He wasn't changing altitude or heading. We were getting a little too close and told my first officer to turn left and descend. When we had crossed paths he was about 100' higher and about 200-300' behind us. At that time we had deviated 20 degree left and about 200' down. I tried to ask about the traffic to mia approach, but kept getting stepped on. Finally able to get through. I told the controller about the traffic. The controller said he had just popped up and was indicating an altitude of 3200' and asked if that looked accurate. I had told him that he had just passed behind us and above us by 100'.

Title: LTT HAD NMAC WITH ANOTHER ACFT IN MIA TCA.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT 3000' INBND TO MIA'S 9R. WE WERE ASSIGNED A HDG OF 360. WERE THEN TOLD ABOUT TFC, AN MDT, AT 1 O'CLOCK, THAT WE WERE GOING TO FOLLOW TO 9R. MY F/O WAS FLYING AND I WAS LOOKING OUT FOR THE TFC. WE WERE APPROX 10-12 MI SW OF THE ARPT. WHEN I SAW TFC AT ABOUT OUR 1-1:30 POSITION AT FIRST I THOUGHT HE WAS THE TFC WE WERE TO FOLLOW. AFTER WATCHING HIM FOR A WHILE HE WAS HDG NWBND AND APPEARED TO BE SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN US. HE WASN'T CHANGING ALT OR HDG. WE WERE GETTING A LITTLE TOO CLOSE AND TOLD MY F/O TO TURN LEFT AND DSND. WHEN WE HAD CROSSED PATHS HE WAS ABOUT 100' HIGHER AND ABOUT 200-300' BEHIND US. AT THAT TIME WE HAD DEVIATED 20 DEG LEFT AND ABOUT 200' DOWN. I TRIED TO ASK ABOUT THE TFC TO MIA APCH, BUT KEPT GETTING STEPPED ON. FINALLY ABLE TO GET THROUGH. I TOLD THE CTLR ABOUT THE TFC. THE CTLR SAID HE HAD JUST POPPED UP AND WAS INDICATING AN ALT OF 3200' AND ASKED IF THAT LOOKED ACCURATE. I HAD TOLD HIM THAT HE HAD JUST PASSED BEHIND US AND ABOVE US BY 100'.
