Narrative:
About 2.5 hours into a routine flight; I experienced sudden; unexpected engine failure. I turned toward ZZZ and [advised ATC]. I was unable to glide to the airport. I landed in a pasture about 3 miles short of the runway. There was no injury to the passenger or pilot. There was no apparent damage to the plane. Preliminary post landing inspection showed 2 large holes in the right upper crankcase near the fire wall. Probably threw a rod. The airplane was up to date with inspections and maintenance.
